Wastewater Treatment Plants Capacity Rerating

Country: South Africa

TruSense was appointed to conduct a comprehensive assessment to establish the actual rated hydraulic and treatment capacities of six wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). These ranged from traditional trickling filters to advanced biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge systems, incorporating both anaerobic and aerobic sludge digestion. The project aimed to determine the optimal operating capacity of each plant, enabling the client to plan future upgrades based on accurate performance benchmarks. The work involved detailed site audits, identification of hydraulic and process bottlenecks, and application of advanced modelling and simulation tools.

TruSense collaborated closely with plant management and operational teams to ensure knowledge transfer and maximum stakeholder engagement. Activities included setting up tailored sampling and analysis protocols, evaluating plant performance data, conducting process optimisation and re-rating, hydraulic capacity assessment, and preparation of a detailed project report. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) manuals were also developed, and workshops held to train plant operators and engineers. In addition to identifying optimal capacities, the study provided clear recommendations for refurbishments required to achieve re-rated capacity, defined control parameters for effluent compliance, and proposed strategies to reduce energy and chemical usage.
